A Successful Blog: The Importance of Your Blog Fonts

I love fonts. Just ask my husband. He does the behind-the-scenes tech stuff here at Musings and he will tell you – I am forever asking him to change the font around. I see a new font on another blog and I want to try it too.

There’s thousands, probably millions of fonts to choose from. There’s the very basics – Times New Romans, Comic Sans, Arial, etc.

And then there’s the rest. Love ‘em or hate ‘em. You could spend hours browsing various fonts. (Shhh – I may or may not have done that. Seriously, I kinda have font-issues.)

The Importance of Your Blog Fonts:

As a blogger, you’ll need to choose a good font for your blog. Even the basic Blogger blog format lets you choose from a limited selection of fonts.

The fonts you choose are important. Probably more than you would think.

Here’s the thing: it may be tempting to go with something fancy or cool to “stand out.” And you certainly can choose one of those fonts – it’s your blog after all. But you should ask yourself one important question:

Can people read it?

If people can’t read through the font, they won’t. They’ll move on.

Don’t fall prey to the font trap and let that happen to you!

There’s really no right or wrong answer – my goal is to simply get you to think about it from your reader’s viewpoint, not just from a “this font looks cool” perspective.

Remember that you will probably have a different font for your post titles than your post text. I recommended sticking to the basics for your post text. You do not want fancy for your post text or it WILL be hard to read.

My experience:

I’ve tried out many, many fonts here at Musings. I wish I had a screen shot to show you every font change we’ve made – it would be quite a collection.

I learned the hard way that I can’t just pick a curly cutsie font and expect people to read through it. (That’s my guilty pleasure – handwriting and script fonts – so pretty!!)

My current fonts are PT Sans Narrow (for my post titles) and Museo Sans (for my post text.) Simple but sweet. And read-able.
